Modano skates for first time with Wings (AP)
Mike Modano grew up dreaming of skating at Joe Louis Arena as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He actually did it Thursday morning. The 40-year-old center, who signed a one-year, free agent deal with the Red Wings worth $1.25 million and the possibility of $500,000 more through performance-based bonuses, joined most of his new teammates during an informal skate.

Blues introduce new G Halak (AP)
The St. Louis Blues introduced their prize acquisition, goaltender Jaroslav Halak, to his new fans Thursday. And the 25-year-old Slovakian said the right things when he called his phenomenal success with Montreal "a real nice memory," but part of the past. He says he's looking now to the future.

Blackhawks sign C Potulny to 1-year deal (AP)
The Chicago Blackhawks signed free-agent center Ryan Potulny to a one-year contract Thursday. The 26-year-old Potulny had 15 goals and 17 assists in 64 regular-season games last season for Edmonton. He also had three goals and five assists in 14 games for Springfield in the American Hockey League. Former Oilers captain Smith arrested (AP)
Former Edmonton Oilers captain Jason Smith faces charges of domestic assault and confinement. The Calgary Police Service confirmed Thursday that Smith was arrested after police were called to his southwest Calgary home Aug. 10. The 36-year-old Smith is charged with assaulting his wife and daughter and faces another count of confining his wife.

Jackets sign No. 4 overall pick Johansen (AP)
The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed center Ryan Johansen to a standard three-year entry level contract. General manager Scott Howson announced on Thursday the deal with the 18-year-old Johansen, who was taken fourth overall in last summer's draft. He scored 25 goals and had 44 assists in 71 games with Portland of the Western Hockey League during the 2009-10 season.
